Hiroshima

Days 11 to 13, 2 nights

A morning at the Peace Memorial, an afternoon on Miyajima

You arrive on the evening of day 11 and leave early on day 13 for the islands. In between, one day that is worth the whole detour south.

One thing to know before you land: Hiroshima runs on trams. They work, they go everywhere, and they are slow. Add time to everything you plan here.

Day 12

The Peace Memorial, then Miyajima

Give the Peace Memorial the whole morning. We spent a long time there, mostly inside the hall, reading.

The man who comes every day

We met an old man at the memorial who has come back every single day for 19 years to tell his story. He is an in-utero survivor, which means his mother was pregnant with him when the bomb went off.

We had not planned for that, and it is the thing I remember most from Hiroshima. If you see someone talking to a small group there, stop and listen.

In the afternoon, take the tram out to Miyajima. The island is beautiful, the ferry crossing is included in your pass, and the torii standing in the water is genuinely impressive in a way photos do not get across. Walk around, eat the local specialties from the stalls, take your time.

Dinner back in Hiroshima was oysters. To confirmthe name of the oyster restaurant, you said you would find it.
